Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) argues the U.S. needs to make a change to its foreign policy.

During an event, the New York lawmaker said, “We need to really look at our foreign policy approach, and shift our foreign policy to not just be militarily and defense based, but to also be climate defense based and diplomatically based.”

“And that right there, I think, is really where we’re going to have to push. And we need to push internally because I’ll tell you, the United States doesn’t want to do that,” she continued.

Finally, Ocasio-Cortez said, “We’ve been there. We’ve been in these rooms, and they don’t want to do it. And we have to do it. We have to do it. We have to do it domestically. And we have to do it abroad as well.”

Ocasio-Cortez has previously claimed that the U.S. bears some responsibility for migrants from Latin American countries traveling to the U.S.

During an appearance on MSNBC in June 2021, she said U.S. climate policy was “impacting the global south disproportionately.”

The Congresswoman continued, “Even though these farmers and these folks in Central and South America contributed to climate change the least in terms of their carbon emissions, they are experiencing the ravages the most right now and first.”

“U.S. climate policy has contributed to this, U.S. foreign policy, U.S. economic, and trade policy has helped contribute to conditions that people are fleeing,” she argued.

Ocasio-Cortez also called it “disappointing” that Vice President Kamala Harris told migrants not to make the journey to the U.S.-Mexico border that same month.

“First, seeking asylum at any US border is a 100% legal method of arrival,” she wrote on Twitter.

She added, “Second, the US spent decades contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America. We can’t help set someone’s house on fire and then blame them for fleeing.”

This is disappointing to see.

Finally, Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “It would be helpful if the US would finally acknowledge its contributions to destabilization and regime change in the region.”

Doing so can help us change US foreign policy, trade policy, climate policy, & carceral border policy to address causes of mass displacement & migration.

“Doing so can help us change US foreign policy, trade policy, climate policy, [and] carceral border policy to address causes of mass displacement & migration,” she concluded.
