Officials in the Biden administration apparently really enjoy making bizarre comparisons.

Last week, First Lady Jill Biden compared the Hispanic community to breakfast tacos.

And on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris compared restrictions on abortion to slavery.

Speaking at the NAACP National Convention, Harris said, “The United States Supreme Court, the highest court of our land, the former court of Thurgood Marshall, took a Constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America, from the woman of America.”

“We know, NAACP, that our country has a history of claiming ownership over human bodies,” she said, drawing applause from the attendees.

Harris added, “And today, extremists, so-called leaders are criminalizing doctors and punishing women for making healthcare decisions for themselves — personal decisions that it is her right to make in consultation with her doctor, her pastor, her priest, her rabbi, her loved ones, not her government telling her what to do.”

This argument about people who are pro-life is a dramatic misrepresentation of pro-life views.

Most people who are pro-life will tell you they believe that their stance is about protecting another life, and not about controlling or “claiming ownership” over someone.

But setting aside the manipulation of the pro-life argument, there is a vast difference between the Supreme Court leaving the decision on whether or not to restrict abortion up to the states and slavery.

With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, each state will be able to make its own decisions about abortion restrictions.

This gives voters more power to determine the policies in their states.

They will have a voice, and if residents of a certain state want to make abortion legal, they can organize and vote for lawmakers who will pass legislation to do just that. By contrast, they can vote for lawmakers who will implement restrictions.

But that’s much different than slavery when Black people were not treated as people, when they were treated as property with no voice, no power, and no ability to exercise a right to self-determination.

One might ask who the speechwriters are in this administration that are responsible for these bizarre comparisons. Perhaps this is just who they are because as the communications team changes, these strange speeches keep coming.
