Republicans will win control of the House of Representatives, ending days of uncertainty about which party will control the lower chamber.

CNN and NBC News projected on Wednesday that Republicans were on track to win at least the 218 seats required for a majority.

NBC predicts Republicans could win as many as 221 seats.

Heading into the election, polls and historical trends appeared to show Republicans were favored to flip control of the House, especially since they needed to flip just five seats to win the chamber.

Since 1945, the president’s party has lost an average of 27 House seats in midterm elections.

However, Democratic candidates performed surprisingly well in the election and avoided massive losses in the House.

And in the wake of their success, there was a chance that Democrats could walk away from the election keeping control of the House.

While Republicans are expected to win control of the House, Democrats are expected to keep control of the Senate.

With a narrow Republican majority in the House, President Joe Biden will likely face significant headwinds trying to advance his agenda even with Democrats in control of the Senate.
