In a documentary titled “Dear Mom, Love Cher” that aired on Lifetime in 2013, Cher spoke candidly about what she learned from her mother.
“She never gave me and my sister [actress Georganne LaPiere Bartylak] advice because, truthfully, she knew we’d never take it. Instead, we learned about life by listening to her talk about the things she did wrong and the things she did right,” Cher said, according to People.
Cher also spoke on the relationship she had with her mother and whether they were always close.
“Yes, but we fought a lot when I was young. I was really strong-headed, even then,” she explained, per People.
She also shared what she remembered about her mother when she was a child.
“She and her friends were so beautiful. When they walked into the room, everything stopped. She was also an amazing dresser. We based the costumes in”Mermaids”on pictures of her from the ’50s,” she said.
In the documentary, Cher revealed that her mother raised her and her two siblings on her own.
“Our mother was supporting us on her own – when someone says, ‘Oh your mother was married that many times?’ it was always the three of us … there were never really men in the house,” she said, per The Guardian. Holt was married six times to five men.
In a phone interview with Huffington Post in 2013, Holt revealed that her mother tried to pressure her into getting an abortion when she was pregnant with Cher.
“I tell you. There are no words. My mother wanted me to [have the abortion] because I didn’t want to stay married, but obviously I couldn’t do it. I remember when the door opened … and I couldn’t do it. And thank God I didn’t,” she said.
