We have been told President Joe Biden is the White House’s best communicator.

And some days, it appears to be true. On other days, it seems to be a total fabrication or a depressing statement about the White House staff.

On Tuesday, Biden spoke about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He noted last year, there were questions about the potential ramifications for Russia if it invaded.

“Would we respond? Or would we look the other way? Would we be strong? Or would we be weak?” Biden began before tripping over his words as he said, “Would be, you, we would be, would we the, all of our allies would be united or divided?”

For Democrats who have concerns about Biden’s age and potentially running again, moments like these must leave them conflicted.

On the one hand, just weeks ago, he delivered the State of the Union address and looked pretty good and coherent as he engaged with Republicans who were shouting at him.

In case you missed it:

And this week, he left early in the morning on a secret trip to Ukraine. The first leg of the journey stopped in Germany after a roughly seven-hour flight, followed by another flight to Poland and a one-hour drive to a train station.

He then took a roughly 10-hour train trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, and appeared with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Such a trip would seem to put aside concerns about the president’s energy and ability to continue serving despite his age.

But the problem with Biden is consistency.

One moment he can spar with Republicans without a script or embark on a secretive, long, and dramatic journey to a warzone. And the next, he could be down stairs, or asking where a congresswoman who died was.

Perhaps, in the end, none of the gaffes or uncomfortable moments will matter to voters. After all, Democrats managed to expand their Senate majority and nearly kept control of the House in what looked like it would be a horrible year for the party in power.

Still, the question about which version of Biden will show up cannot help soothe Democrats’ nerves about the 2024 election.
