Former President Donald Trump appeared to confuse a woman who has accused him of rape and defamation with one of his ex-wives during a deposition.
On Friday, the video of Trump’s deposition he gave in author E. Jean Carroll’s civil lawsuit against him was released.
Carroll has accused the former president of raping her in a department store in the 1990s. NPR notes, “In 2019, then again in 2022, Carroll filed a pair of civil lawsuits over the incident, accusing Trump of defamation and battery, seeking unspecified damages.”
In the deposition, which took place in October 2022, the former president was shown a picture apparently of Carroll.
However, he appeared to think she was his ex-wife Marla Maples.
“I don’t even know the woman,” Trump said, before adding, “Let’s see, I don’t know… It’s Marla.”

This moment shows Trump mistaking E. Jean Carroll, who alleges Trump assaulted her in 1996, for his ex-wife Marla Maples.

He reiterated, “That’s Marla, yeah, that’s my wife.”
Trump was then asked to clarify who he was pointing to, and he apparently pointed to Carroll.
However, his lawyer Alina Habba interjected, “No, that’s Carroll.”
“The person you just pointed to is E. Jean Carroll. And the woman on the right is your wife Ivana,” Trump was told.
Trump responded, “Is that Carroll? Cause it’s very blurry.”
Trump has denied Carroll’s allegations against him.
He has also said, “I don’t know this woman, have no idea who she is.”
“While I am not supposed to say it, I will. This woman is not my type!” he added.
