The attorney who supported former President Donald Trump in seeking to overturn the 2020 election results has given up his law license rather than face disbarment.

In a letter addressed to Paula Frederick, general counsel for the State Bar of Georgia, and Damon Elmore, the executive director for the State Bar of Georgia, Wood requested that his law license be moved over to “Retired Status.”

“I have retired from the active practice of law as I have been planning to do since late 2019,” Wood said in an interview with CNN.

In his letter dated July 4 and posted to his Telegram channel, Wood writes that he knows his “request is unqualified, irrevocable and permanent.” He continues on to acknowledge that he will be “prohibited from practicing law” in Georgia and other states.

“I AM OFFICIALLY RETIRED!!!” Wood wrote in another Telegram post, adding that the “GA disciplinary proceedings against” him would be dismissed today.

Wood, a practicing attorney since 1977, gained national attention after he began supporting Trump’s claims of election fraud and helping to file legal challenges in an attempt to overturn the election results.

Robert Remar, an attorney for the State Bar of Georgia, wrote in a court filing that “by permitting (Wood) to transfer to Retired Status and thereby prohibiting (Wood) from practicing law in this state or any other state or jurisdiction, the Office of General Counsel believes that it has achieved the goals of disciplinary action, including protecting the public and the integrity of the judicial system and the legal profession,” according to CNN.

Several other lawyers who supported Trump’s claims of election fraud have also faced disciplinary action.

Former New York City Mayor and personal Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani had his law license suspended in June 2021 after a New York court ruled he had made “demonstrably false and misleading statements” while helping to support Trump election fraud claims.

John Eastman, a former law professor, also found himself in the middle of disciplinary action after he tried to assist Trump.
