‘Just Walk Out’: People Respond to Teacher’s Rule Limiting Bathroom Usage for Students

A gender neutral bathroom is seen at a restaurant in Washington, DC, on May 5, 2016. A heated national debate over access to bathrooms by transgenders is sweeping the United States, with schools and businesses grappling with the issue that has become a hot topic in the presidential campaign. The so-called "bathroom battle" erupted after North Carolina in March became the first US state to require transgender people to use restrooms in public buildings that match the sex on their birth certificate, rather than the gender by which they identify. Mississippi followed suit in April and a number of other conservative states and cities are mulling or have passed similar legislation. / AFP / MANDEL NGAN (Photo credit should read MANDEL NGAN/AFP via Getty Images)

Several people online are responding to a post on Reddit that shows a teacher’s bathroom policy, limiting bathroom usage for students.

Multiple people slammed a teacher who instituted a bathroom policy, limiting students to be allowed to use the restroom three times a month, according to a post on Reddit. One user encouraged the poster to “walk out” while others joked about making a corner in the room a “piss corner.”

“Just walk out,” one person wrote. “What are they gonna do? Tell your parents you went to pee?”

“Pick a corner, any corner,” another user joked. “That’s the piss corner now. Make sure the whole class knows.”

Do you think this bathroom policy is extreme?

Another person advised the poster that the teacher “really can’t stop” students from leaving to use the restroom.

“Go to a guidance counselor/principal,” the person wrote. “If that doesn’t work I’m sure there’s a local newspaper that would love to write a story about freedom of the piss.”

“If I was a parent of a student of this teacher she would be hearing from me,” another person wrote. “I get it that kids may use this as an excuse to get out of class but maybe the kid has a medical issue, drinks a lot of water, or has chronic diarrhea.”

Another person shared that their son’s school had “tried this.”

“I told him to just walk out if he needed to and I would deal with the consequence,” the user wrote. “I sent an email letting the school know he was in charge of his own bladder and if they had a problem we could discuss with my attorney.”

In a September 2022 essay from Business Insider, a parent wrote that her children had shared that their teachers only allowed them to use the bathroom 3-4 times a semester. The parent was shocked to learn from other parents on Facebook that their children’s teacher had instituted a similar bathroom policy.

“Where I live, middle-school students are given four bathroom passes per semester and get rewards, such as movie days and snacks, based on how many they didn’t use,” a Minnesota parent of two, Heather Holter said. “The sixth- through twelfth-grade lunch bathrooms are locked because the school is worried about vaping.”
