Attorney General Merrick Garland declared that he “would resign” if asked by President Joe Biden to take action regarding former President Donald Trump.

During a Sunday interview on CBS News “60 Minutes” Garland expressed that he did not think that he would be put in a position by Biden to take any sort of action against Trump.

“I am sure that that will not happen, but I would not do anything in that regard,” Garland said. “And if necessary, I would resign. But there is no sense that anything like that will happen.”

The Justice Department is currently overseeing a mix of several indictments against Trump which center around his efforts to overturn the election results of 2020 and claims that the election was stolen.

Additionally, the Justice Department is overseeing cases regarding Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden. On Sept. 14, Hunter Biden was indicted on three firearms charges regarding the unlawful possession of a firearm while on drugs.

When asked if the cases against Trump were being timed to ruin Trump’s chance in the upcoming presidential election, Garland dismissed the accusations.

“Well, that’s absolutely not true,” Garland said. “Justice Department prosecutors are nonpartisan. They don’t allow partisan considerations to play any role in their determinations.”

Garland clarified that Biden had never tried to be hands-on in these investigations, and therefore, Garland has never had to tell him “hands off these investigations.”

“I represent the American people,” Garland explained. “I don’t represent the president. I represent the American people. And likewise, I am not Congress’s prosecutor. I work for the American people.”

Trump is set to appear in a New York court later today regarding a civil fraud trial regarding him allegedly inflating the value of properties and other assets.
