According to the Associated Press, the immigrants are living in the shuttle bus center at Terminal 1.

A volunteer working at the terminal, Vianney Marzullo, noted, “It was supposed to be a stop-and-go place.”

The illegal immigrants are reportedly remaining in the makeshift shelter for weeks, sleeping on cardboard and frequenting airport bathrooms for personal use.

Marzullo said, “It’s very concerning. It is not just a safety matter, but a public health matter.”

Up to 500 people have been living at the airport as the city struggles to find housing while more illegal immigrants arrive.

Homeless shelters are full, and local officials are working to put up winterized tents to offer temporary housing, the AP reported.

Over 14,000 illegal immigrants have been sent to this airport, and as the border crisis rages on, that number is expected to increase.

In addition, a small fraction of the illegals have also been sent to stay at the Chicago Midway Airport as O’Hare fills up, according to the AP.

This has caused American outlets to drive conversations about what’s going on on social media.
