Mike Johnson Wins Speaker Vote With No Republican Defections

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 25: U.S. Speaker Pro Tempore Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) (L), Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) (C) and Rep. Garret Graves (R-IA) talk as the House of Representatives holds an election for a new Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol on October 25, 2023 in Washington, DC. After a contentious nominating period that has seen four candidates over a three-week period, the House GOP conference selected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as their most recent nominee to succeed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted on October 4 in a move led by a small group of conservative members of his own party. The House of Representatives has an elected speaker again.

On Wednesday, 220 Republicans voted to name Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) speaker, no Republicans voted against him.

Meanwhile, 209 Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

🚨🚨BREAKING — Rep. MIKE JOHNSON has won the House speakership. Every House Republican voted for the Louisiana Republican, vaulting him from the vice chairmanship of the House Republican Conference to the chamber's top position.

The vote ends a 22-day streak where the chamber did not have a formal speaker and was prevented from conducting any business after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted from the position.

Johnson was nominated on Tuesday night after three other Republicans were nominated and failed to win enough support to become speaker.

Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) were both nominated for the position but withdrew from consideration before heading to a floor vote as opposition to them grew.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was also nominated and went on to lose three floor votes before Republicans voted to drop him as their nominee.
