House Censures Rashida Tlaib — With 22 Dems Backing the Move

WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 7: At left, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) attend talk with each other as they attend a bipartisan candlelight vigil with members of Congress to commemorate one month since the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, at the U.S. Capitol November 7, 2023 in Washington, DC. In addition to the roughly 1,400 people killed in the October 7 attack, Hamas is still holding around 240 hostages in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that there will be no ceasefire in the Gaza Strip until all of the hostages held by Hamas are released. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images)

The House is formally rebuking Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for her comments about the Israeli-Hamas war.

On Tuesday, the chamber voted 234-188 to censure Tlaib.

Twenty-two Democrats voted in favor of the motion, while four Republicans voted against it, and four lawmakers voted present.

The resolution accuses the Michigan Democrat of spreading “false narratives” about Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre in Israel.

Additionally, it condemned her for “calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”

Specifically, the censure resolution noted Tlaib’s use of the phrase “from the river to the sea,” which the Anti-Defamation League has labeled an antisemitic slogan.

The resolution called the phrase a “genocidal call to violence to destroy the state of Israel and its people to replace it with a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.”

Tuesday’s vote came after a previous censure resolution was tabled with 23 Republicans voting in favor of blocking the measure.

The initial resolution baselessly accused Tlaib of leading an insurrection as well as condemned her for her comments about Israel.
