WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 31: U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his hush-money trial before speaking on the Middle East at the White House on May 31, 2024 in Washington, DC. Biden said Trump had a fair trial and an impartial jury found him guilty on all 34 counts and added it is dangerous for anyone to say the trial was rigged. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

CNN commentator Van Jones is predicting the first debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will have some very high stakes.

On Thursday, CNN host Jim Acosta how “big of a moment” it is for Biden.

“This is the entire election as far as I’m concerned” Jones responded. “If you are a carbon-based life form, you’re going to be watching. If you’ve got a functioning brain stem, you’re going to be watching.”

He continued:

“If Biden goes out there and messes up, it’s game over. If he walks out there and a week later he’s lower in the polls, it’s panic in the party.”

By contrast, Jones said, “But if he goes in there and he can handle himself against Donald Trump — a runaway train, a locomotive, a raging bull — then this guy deserves another shot to be president, because that is tough.”

“You couldn’t do it. I couldn’t do it. [If] you can stand toe-to-toe with a runaway train like Donald Trump for an hour and a half, you are fit to be president, period, point blank,” he continued. “This is the whole presidency in a bottle, in a week.”

The exchange comes ahead of the first debate between Trump that will air on CNN starting at 9p.m. and be moderated by the network’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
