UK’s Labour Party Wins Big as Keir Starmer Becomes PM

There’s a new party in charge in the United Kingdom as Labour Party garnered a historic landslide win the general election and sent Keir Starmer to 10 Downing St.

Starmer is the new prime minister, taking over office after 14 years of office rule by Conservatives, according to Mediaite.

Starmer is a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer was appointed prime minister by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Friday. 

“We did it! The sunshine of hope is returning to our great country,” Starmer after the election, adding this was now an “age of national renewal.”

Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat Friday morning.

“The Labour Party has won this election,” Sunak said. “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict and I take responsibility for the loss.”

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future,” he said.

Starmer is the first Labour leader to win an election since Tony Blair, per ABC News.

Starmer’s election platform was “end the chaos.”

He also said he’d focus to on reinvigorating Britain’s services and infrastructure. 

Another promise he made was move away from culture war debates.

This includes Brexit, adding the U.K. will not rejoin in his lifetime.
