George Stephanopoulos, an ABC News anchor, said he does not believe President Joe Biden can serve another four years.
“I don’t think he can serve four more years,” Stephanopoulos responded on a video to a passerby in New York City.
The footage was first obtained by TMZ Tuesday.
Stephanopoulos later regretted those words in a statement to The Hill.
“Earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have,” he said through a spokesperson.
ABC also responded, saying, “George expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News.”
Stephanopoulos interviewed Biden after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump on June 27.
The performance added concern to Biden’s age and mental acuity. Many Democrats have called for him to step down from the presidential race.
Biden told Stephanopoulos the debate was a “bad night” and vowed to stay in the race.
“I don’t think there’s anybody more qualified to be president or win this race than me,” Biden said.
