Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson Ian Sams said Monday that Republican vice presidential candidate and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance has the skill to effectively misdirect voters during the upcoming debate against Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Vance and Walz are set to face off during their only vice presidential debate on Tuesday night ahead of the 2024 election. Sams stated on MSNBC’s “Ana Cabrera Reports” that Vance is a “slick” politician who can effectively “play the game” on the debate stage, but assured he is an unpopular running mate.
“Something about J.D. Vance which I think people don’t realize, the more they see him, the more they dislike him,” Sams said. “He is one of the most unfavorably viewed running mates in modern history. Now look, he’s a slick guy. He’s a Yale Law School graduate who did a best-selling book and toured the country and has done so many interviews about it and about his candidacy for vice president. He’s gonna be slick, he misdirects, he’s dishonest, he can play the game onstage pretty well, but Governor Walz is gonna speak to the American people as he has during the course of this campaign.”

Sams said Vance will present a “dark and divisive vision” for America during the debate while the American people can relate to Walz, who he referred to as an “average guy.”
“He’s just an average guy, coach, school teacher who I think a lot of people in this country can relate to,” Sams continued. “And so when he shares the positive vision of what he and the vice president are running on to help the American people, I think that it’ll help solidify the choice in this race and I think J.D. Vance will be saddled with having to clean up the mess that was Donald Trump’s first debate and push a pretty dark and divisive vision that the country is ready to turn the page on.”
Walz signed the Protective Reproductive Options Act in May 2023 that codified abortion into law without any restrictions, and issued an executive order in June 2022 prohibiting individuals coming from states that restrict abortion from getting extradited for receiving the procedure in Minnesota.
The governor signed an executive order on March 8, 2023, to allow anyone, including minors, to undergo sex change operations and gender hormone procedures. He also signed a “trans refuge” law on April 27, 2023, to prevent the enforcement of out-of-state laws that intend to remove a child from their parents for receiving transgender medical procedures.
Walz notably signed a law requiring free tampons to be accessible inside boy’s bathrooms for students in grades 4 through 12.
Harris earned the lowest vice presidential favorability rating in NBC News polling history with a net-negative rating of -17 in June 2023. The poll found that 49% of respondents had a negative view of the vice president, while 32% held a positive view of her.
Some Americans told USA Today in December that they were unsatisfied with Harris and the policy initiatives she had taken.
The corporate media has issued several attacks against Vance since becoming the vice presidential pick, focusing heavily on the Ohio senator calling Harris and other Democratic women “childless cat ladies” during a 2021 interview with Daily Caller News Foundation co-founder Tucker Carlson. Vance said his remarks were not criticizing women without children, but rather the Democratic Party for being “anti-family.”
“The View” co-host Joy Behar echoed false accusations stating that Vance supports women staying in violent marriages. Vance has repeatedly disputed the accusations, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity the Democrats “have completely twisted [his] words.”
