Former first lady Melania Trump believes women should decide what happens with their bodies, including the right to have an abortion.
Melania Trump defended that right in her upcoming memoir, “Melania,” according to The Guardian.
The Guardian obtained a copy of the book prior to its release on Tuesday.
“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” she wrote.
“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” she wrote.
Denying that right is not an option.
“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life,” Melania Trump added.
This opinion differs from her husband’s, per the HuffPost.
Former President Donald Trump, who is the Republican nominee for president, has said women should be punished if they have an abortion if it illegal.
Melania Trump said she and her husband do have “occasional political disagreements.” However, she remains private about those differences, according to The Guardian.
Donald Trump had also taken credit in influencing the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973. His role centers around his nominations of three conservative justices.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump said he would veto a national abortion ban because he believes it is up to the states to decide about abortion, per the HuffPost.
