Google is offering an explanation after it was called out by some of X, including Elon Musk.
When searching for where to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump, the results were different.
If “Where can I vote for Harris?” was searched, a “Where to vote” map would display to help people find their polling location. However, when “Where can I vote for Trump?” was searched in Google, a map did not display.
Less than half an hour later, Google responded to Musk’s thread explaining a “fix is coming.”
“Thx for this. The ‘where to vote’ panel is triggering for some specific searches bc Harris is also the name of a county in TX. Happens for ‘Vance’ too bc it’s also the name of a county. Fix is coming,” the post read. “Note very few people actually search for voting places this way.”
Shortly after, Musk tried it himself.
“I just tried this myself and Google still shows you where to vote for Harris, but not Trump, even when anonymous,” he wrote.
UPDATE [11/05/24, 4:31 p.m. EST]: Google shared, “Update: This is now fixed.”
