Daniel Penny, a 26-year-old Marine veteran, was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide on Monday.
Penny was charged after he put subway performer Jordan Neely in a fatal chokehold on a New York F train in May 2023.
“The case has sparked discussions on public safety, race relations and New York’s handling of homelessness and mental health problems. Penny’s defense centered on the claim that he acted to protect other subway passengers from Neely, leading him to become a conservative symbol for citizen crime fighting,” as The Washington Post writes.
