Massie’s New Year’s Resolution: No Vote For Johnson as Speaker

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 11: U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) speaks to reporters after the House Republicans nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) to be their candidate for Speaker of the House, at the U.S. Capitol on October 11, 2023 in Washington, DC. Despite winning a majority of Republican support to run for Speaker, members of his party have changed their support putting Scalise's run for Speaker on uncertain terms. The full House of Representatives is expected to vote on the next Speaker of the House shortly after McCarthy was voted out of his leadership position last week. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

If there’s one thing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is resolving to not do is not support Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) in his quest to maintain his speakership.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) asked Massie if he’d vote for Johnson if Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) would become the chairman of House Rules Committee, per The Hill.

Gaetz is the new host on One America News Network.

“Oh no. You can pull all my fingernails out, you can shove bamboo up in them, you can start cutting off my fingers,” Massie said late Thursday.

“I am not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow, and you can take that to the bank,” Massie added.

Massie has previously said Johnson is not up to the job as Speaker and is not what the Republican Party needs.

“[We] want a Speaker who inspires the public and who can make our case in the media, so we can keep the majority for the second half of Trump’s term,” Massie posted on X on New Year’s Eve.

Challenge accepted.

First let me note that the “vote for Mike” camp is not trying to make the case that Mike Johnson is endowed with the qualities necessary to lead our conference. Even you have limited yourself here to procedural justifications for his speakership rather than…

— Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) December 31, 2024

“Johnson nearly led us to the minority in what was a banner year for Trump,” he wrote. “He is certain to lose us the majority in 2026.”

But not everyone is anti-Johnson as both President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk have endorsed Johnson.

“Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson, a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support. A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!! – A BIG AFFIRMATION, INDEED. MAGA!” Trump wrote Friday on Truth Social
