Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace and Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett clashed Tuesday during a committee hearing over civil rights and biological men in women’s spaces.
Chairman James Comer convened the House Oversight Committee’s first hearing with both new and returning members for the 119th Congress. More than two hours into the hearing, Crockett used some of her time to urge the group to reinstate a subcommittee focused on civil rights.
“I’m asking you to do the courageous thing today and just institute a subcommittee that would make sure that we are looking out for those protections of everyone in this country. To make sure that we have real freedom, something we all supposedly espouse to believe in,” Crockett said.
Comer then gave Mace the floor, where she blasted Crockett’s remarks, calling it “rich” that Democrats like the Texas lawmaker would discuss rights.
“Coming from a party that can’t define what a woman is and won’t give women the right to privacy. You all want men with penises — chicks with dicks — in the bathroom with us. You want women to be forced to undress in front of men in the locker room and in dressing rooms,” Mace said.
“It’s so hypocritical for you to sit here and say and be, you know, screaming from the rooftops about the right to privacy and civil rights when you don’t respect women,” Mace added.
The Republican representative said that women who have been sexually assaulted should not be forced to share spaces with biological men.
A rape survivor, Mace has previously discussed her experience in public, including at a tense ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos where she accused him of “shaming” her for supporting President-elect Trump.
As Mace concluded Tuesday, a fellow Democrat gave Crockett her remaining time.
“Somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now, so she gonna keep saying trans, trans, trans, so that people will feel threatened and child, listen, I want y’all to tell me —” Crockett said before Mace jumped in.
“I am no child! Do not call me a child! I am no child! Don’t even start. I am a grown woman who’s 47-years-old. I have broken more glass ceilings than you have — ” Mace yelled.
As Crockett tried to finish her statement, she requested her time be reclaimed, but Mace quickly responded, “If you want to take it outside,” they could.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act passed Congress Tuesday with a 218-206 vote, with only two Democrats joining Republicans to keep biological men out of women’s sports.
