Space Force Head Based In Greenland Fired After Vance Visit

PITUFFIK, GREENLAND - MARCH 28: US Vice President JD Vance speaks at the US military's Pituffik Space Base on March 28, 2025 in Pituffik, Greenland. The itinerary for the visit was scaled back after a plan for a more extensive trip drew criticism from officials in Greenland and Denmark, which controls foreign and defence policy of the semiautonomous territory. Vice President JD Vance has fired the commander of the U.S. Space Force base in Greenland after she sent out emails across the base following Vance’s visit.

According to Associated Press, Col. Susan Meyers broke with official messaging and was removed from her post as commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland.

In a statement issued Thursday, Space said Meyers was fired because of a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.”

“Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” the statement said.

The AP further reported an official had confirmed Friday that Meyers has sent the email showing support for both Greenland and Denmark.

The Denmark territory is part of NATO and an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump has more than once floated the idea of annexing Greenland, citing national security purposes.

Vance’s recent visit has sparked some tense exchanged between the U.S. and Denmark, with Trump not ruling out the use of military force.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Purnell said in a post on X Thursday that the “actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”
