U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee is new to the job, but spent his first day visiting one of the oldest and holiest site in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Huckabee, at the behest of President Donald Trump, visited the Western Wall Friday to insert a prayer in the wall handwritten by Trump, according to Fox56News.
“Those are his initials, D.T.,“ Huckabee said as he showed the note to members of the media.
Huckabee added that Trump told him to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Huckabee also said efforts are being made to bring those still held by Hamas home.
The new ambassador posted about his actions on X.
“This morning, I visited @westernwall_il in Israel’s eternal capital, Jerusalem, and placed a prayer from @POTUS between the stones,” Huckabee wrote. “On behalf of President Trump and the American people, I say to Israel: our commitment to you is unwavering and we pray for the immediate return of all the hostages. Israel will never be alone.”
Huckabee begins his ambassadorship in the midst of an 18-month war between Israel and Hama in the Gaza Strip. Mediators are working to put a ceasefire back together.
The Israel Foreign Ministry posted its welcome to Huckabee on Friday.
“Welcome to Israel, @USAmbIsrael Mike Huckabee!” the ministry wrote. “We wish you much success as you begin your important mission. We are confident that together, we will elevate the unbreakable bond between Israel and the United States to even greater heights.”
