The lawsuit that pit President Donald Trump against Paramount Global and CBS has been settled as the president will receive millions of dollars.
From the get-go, Trump will receive $16 million in compensation in the election interference lawsuit brought on by an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris on “60 Minutes,” Fox News reported.
That money Trump gets immediately will go towards legal fees and charitable causes, such as his future presidential library. Trump will decide where that money will go.
The total amount to go to Trump could be more than $30 million
In exchange, CBS will update its editorial standards — the network will now immediately release full, unedited transcripts of interviews involving future presidential candidates. This has been referred to as the “Trump Rule.”
“With this record settlement, President Donald J. Trump delivers another win for the American people as he, once again, holds the Fake News media accountable for their wrongdoing and deceit,” a spokesperson for the president’s legal team said. “CBS and Paramount Global realized the strength of this historic case and had no choice but to settle. President Trump will always ensure that no one gets away with lying to the American People as he continues on his singular mission to Make America Great Again.”
The network denies any journalistic wrongdoing with the settlement.
“The settlement will include a release of all claims regarding any CBS reporting through the date of the settlement, including the Texas action and the threatened defamation action,” Paramount said in a statement. Paramount is the parent company of CBS.
The lawsuit stems from an edited answer Harris gave regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not “listening” to the Biden administration. In a preview clip aired on “Face the Nation,” Harris’ answer was referred to as a “word salad.”
But the answer was more concise when it was shown on “60 Minutes.”
CBS was accused of editing Harris’ response to make her look good.
