A host of leading younger Democrats are crafting a new group aiming to prevent the party from being in the “permanent minority,” the New York Times reported Thursday.

Members of the group, which is called Majority Democrats, are attempting to recruit new candidates and develop messaging to help boost the Democratic Party’s image and reverse its recent electoral fortunes, according to the NYT.

“If we don’t build this big-tent party that can win majorities, we’re on the path of being the party of the permanent minority from a national-election perspective,” Democratic Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig, one of the leaders of the effort, told the NYT.

Craig also told the NYT she believes that the Democratic Party promoting anti-Trump messaging “might win a midterm election,” but said that “it’s not going to build lasting majorities.” The Minnesota Democrat added that “we’ve got to lay out the case for what we’re for as a party.”

Craig is notably running for a competitive Senate seat in Minnesota in the 2026 midterms. Her primary opponent, Democratic Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, was leading Craig by a 30-point margin, according to a Public Policy Polling survey released in February.

Majority Democrats consists of roughly 30 Democratic leaders from all levels of government, according to the NYT.

The outlet’s report comes as Democratic lawmakers are attempting to remake their party’s brand ahead of the upcoming midterm elections and 2028 White House race. Similarly, a spate of recent polls have shown that many Americans strongly disapprove of leaders in the Democratic Party.

Majority Democrats’ executive director is Rohan Patel, who formerly served on Tesla’s executive team and also worked in the Obama White House, the NYT reported. Others individuals working on the group’s communications division include Democratic strategists Lis Smith, Eric Koch, Andrew Mamo and Jackie Rosa, according to the outlet.

“The thing that unites all of us is that we’re trying to build a big tent,” Democratic Texas State Rep. James Talarico told the NYT.

“Those are values that Democrats usually espouse, but we need to keep them ourselves,” Talarico, a potential Texas U.S. Senate candidate set to appear on the “The Joe Rogan Experience,” added. “We’ve got to be open-minded. We’ve got to be willing to join with people in a coalition that we may not share 100% of our policy views.”

Some Democrats have been calling on Democratic Party leaders to move away from “woke” identity politics in the aftermath of the party’s 2024 election losses.

Democratic Nevada State Rep. Sandra Jauregui told the NYT that the Democratic Party heavily promoted issues such as abortion rights in the 2024 election cycle, which she believes did not appeal to many Hispanic and Asian American voters in her district.

“The voters have been telling us what they wanted,” Jauregui told the outlet. “We just have not done a good job of listening.”

Majority Democrats could not immediately be reached for comment.
