The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has pulled “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue” from its fall lineup, citing unmet “legal clearance” conditions.

The documentary, directed by Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich, tells the story of retired Israeli General Noam Tibon’s rescue mission on Oct. 7, 2023. Tibon braved Hamas-controlled territory to save his family from the massacre unfolding in southern Israel, rescuing his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, as well as other civilians and wounded soldiers. His actions, first reported by 60 Minutes, came amid the bloodiest terror attack in Israel’s history.

TIFF, despite initially inviting the film in July, quietly revoked its offer weeks later, according to Deadline. A TIFF spokesperson told Deadline that the festival withdrew the film because it failed to meet “general requirements,” including legal clearance of footage. TIFF further justified the decision by referencing “anticipated and known risks” associated with screening a film that deals with a “highly sensitive subject matter.”

“The purpose of the requested conditions was to protect TIFF from legal implications and to allow TIFF to manage and mitigate anticipated and known risks around the screening of a film about highly sensitive subject matter, including potential threat of significant disruption,” TIFF told Deadline. “As per our terms and conditions for participation in the festival, ‘TIFF may disqualify from participation in the Festival any Film that TIFF determines in its sole and absolute discretion would not be in TIFF’s best interest to include in the Festival.’”

The filmmakers behind “The Road Between Us” blasted TIFF for what they called a betrayal of its mission, accusing the festival of bowing to political pressure and censoring a story that deserves to be seen. In a statement to Deadline, they defended their work as a human story, not a political statement.

“We are shocked and saddened that a venerable film festival has defied its mission and censored its own programming by refusing this film. Ultimately, film is an art form that stimulates debate from every perspective that can both entertain us and make us uncomfortable,”  Deadline quoted “The Road Between Us” filmmakers as saying. “A film festival lays out the feast, and the audience decides what they will or won’t see. We are not political filmmakers, nor are we activists; we are storytellers. We remain defiant, we will release the film, and we invite audiences, broadcasters, and streamers to make up their own mind, once they have seen it.”

Hamas launched its deadliest assault on Israel in years on Oct. 7, 2023, firing roughly 5,000 rockets and sending armed militants across the border. The attack, which started with heavy rocket fire from Gaza, quickly escalated as fighters breached Israeli territory. The militants slaughtered approximately 1,200 civilians, kidnapped more than 240 people, and carried out acts of sexual violence, igniting the war between Israel and Hamas.
