President Donald Trump issued a statement on Monday honoring the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, an ancient celebration observed by multiple Christian denominations dating back to at least the fifth century.

“Today, I salute the millions of Christian believers in the United States and around the world observing the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel,” Trump stated in a presidential message which White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted to X late Monday night. The feast, which is said to have its origins in the fifth century, has long been celebrated by Western Christians on Sept. 29

“According to sacred Scripture, when the Devil rebelled against God in Heaven, Saint Michael and his legion of angels cast Satan down to Earth— triumphantly reasserting God’s sovereignty over all creation,” Trump added in his statement. “For 2,000 years, Christians have looked to Saint Michael the Archangel for protection, strength, and courage in times of conflict, distress, and doubt.”

“In 1886, nearly 140 years ago, Pope Leo XIII, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, fearing for the future of the western world, introduced the legendary Prayer to Saint Michael, which is still recited to this day in churches and homes all across our Nation and throughout the world,” Trump continued, adding the text of the Catholic St. Michael Prayer in italics at the end of his message.

Then-candidate Trump notably posted the St. Michael Prayer to multiple social media platforms on Sept. 29, 2024, while campaigning for the presidency. The posts came exactly two weeks after the president survived the second assassination attempt on him in two months.

The current American-born leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, chose his papal name in honor of Leo XIII.

While Western Christian denominations such as the Roman Catholic Church, Lutheran Church and Anglican Church celebrate the Feast of Saint Michael on Sept. 29, Eastern Christian traditions honor the archangel on Nov. 8.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
