Former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized the party on Monday for failing to deliver for the working class.
Cuomo, who is running for New York City mayor as an independent after losing June’s Democratic primary, shamed the party on “Morning Joe” for allowing housing prices to drastically surge and for becoming “disconnected” from working class Americans. The former Democratic governor of New York stated that the Democrats cannot name anything they have done to deliver for working families.
“Shame on you, Democratic Party, because you haven’t delivered. The Democratic Party, I think the the two main issues, they have become disconnected from mainstream working families who were our base, my father’s base, Bill Clinton’s base, President Obama’s base,” Cuomo said. “We’re not at their kitchen table, number one, and number two, we don’t produce. We don’t deliver. Senator Ted Kennedy, God rest his soul, told me as a young fellow before I ever ran for anything, when people walk into the voting booth, they have to know one thing you did that changed their lives.”
“You can’t name something that the Democratic Party did that changed their lives, right? That they know inherently. The Democratic Party has to produce. The far left runs [Mamdani],” Cuomo continued.

The average cost of rent in New York City amounts to $4,029 per month, making New York one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. The city has an average monthly cost of $4,130, with groceries costing between $400 and $500 per month.
Cuomo argued that Mamdani is unqualified to be the next mayor because he had the “worst attendance record” in the New York State Assembly and has never held a real job.
“For mayor, 33 years old, never had a job, never managed anything. An assemblyman passed three bills, worst attendance record in the New York State Assembly. As a mayor, as an executive, as somebody who’s supposed to get things done, no, that’s going to sound the problem,” Cuomo said.
Mamdani has campaigned on implementing rent freezes, raising the minimum wage to $30 and adding government-run grocery stores and buses. He has come under fire for previously calling the New York Police Department (NYPD) “wicked,” “corrupt” and “racist,” though he has walked back those comments and tried to assure voters that he will not defund the police.
Mamdani stated in a resurfaced video from a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference that the end goal of socialism is about “seizing the means of production.”
Cuomo stated during the mayoral debate on Thursday that Mamdani is not a Democrat, noting that he did not even vote for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Mamdani did not deny Cuomo’s accusation.
