American women are likelier than men to agree with most Republicans that crime is an “extremely” or “very” serious problem, a Thursday Gallup poll shows.

Fifty-five percent of women in the survey said crime is a serious problem and 45% of men said the same, though both groups’ sense of its severity decreased since 2024, according to Gallup. Sixty-nine percent of Republicans agreed, while most Independents and Democrats in the poll said otherwise.

An overwhelming 72% of women said crime was a serious problem in 2023, compared to 55% of men. By 2025, this perception declined by 17% and 10% respectively, according to Gallup’s past data.

Americans were also more likely to say crime is serious in 2025 if they had under $40,000 in annual household income compared to higher income brackets, Gallup found. Residents of “Town/rural” areas and “Big/Small city” regions in the poll were also more likely than suburban Americans to see the problem as very urgent.

President Donald Trump also performed 1% better in 2024 versus 2020 with female voters, who typically lean more liberal than men, Democratic polling firm Catalist found.

Trump pledged to flood liberal cities such as Chicago, Illinois, with federal officials to fight violent crime. His nationwide crackdown began with increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., in August. Trump stationed the National Guard in D.C. public areas to maintain order and promised to send them to cities such as Portland, Oregon, besieged by violent leftist protesters.

The president’s actions in D.C. prompted public debate about the severity of crime in D.C., which had the fourth highest murder rate in the country, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology. Left-wing figures and media outlets claimed Trump is exaggerating the problem.
