Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky said on Monday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer must step down from his leadership role since he is no longer in line with most of the caucus.

While Schumer voiced his opposition to the Republican-led continuing resolution (CR) to reopen the government on Sunday, eight members of his party defied him by voting in favor of ending the shutdown in a procedural vote. Roginsky said on “Chris Jansing Reports” that Schumer is evidently unable to lead the Democrats in the Senate since the government is poised to reopen without the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credit extensions.

“I am ideologically quite aligned with where [Schumer] is as a senator, but he’s no longer capable of running this caucus. He’s no longer capable of leading the Democratic Party,” Roginsky said. “I am a lifelong, I mean, I am an establishment Democrat, and I’m here to say that [Independent Vermont Sen.] Bernie Sanders is much more in line with where I and many other Democrats are today than Chuck Schumer is. And, you know, if you would have asked me that five years ago, I would have laughed at you.”

“So that’s just to underscore exactly how furious, how furious Democrats are today for putting the country through this without having it out,” Roginsky continued.

All of the Democrats who voted for reopening the government are either retiring or are not up for reelection in the 2026 midterms. Most of these senators, including Tim Kaine of Virginia, changed their tune on the shutdown once their party won sweeping victories in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races.

Schumer stated that he is against reopening the government because the CR fails to address the nation’s healthcare crisis. He has previously called government shutdowns “self-defeating” and a “politics of idiocy,” and stated in September 2024 that a shutdown would make the average American “suffer most.”

The Senate got the necessary 60-vote threshold to advance the CR without adding extensions to the ACA tax credits, which Democrats have been demanding in exchange for their support. Senate Republicans agreed to reverse the layoffs of 4,000 federal workers and schedule a vote on extending these tax credits in December, which are currently set to expire on Dec. 31.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and many progressive leaders are outraged at Senate Democrats for allowing the CR to move forward without the ACA subsidies.
