Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday that President Donald Trump calling her a “traitor” was “hurtful,” a sentiment she  reflected on the president over the Jeffrey Epstein files and recently meeting with the Syrian president.

Greene tore into Trump over what she dubbed his administration’s “shocking” handling of the Epstein files on “State of the Union with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.” This was her first interview since Trump announced he would not be supporting his longtime stalwart for reelection in Georgia’s Republican primary. The congresswoman, who clarified during the interview she still supports Trump, is one of four House Republicans to support a discharge petition to release files related to the deceased sex trafficker Epstein. In recent weeks, she also publicly spoke out about her break with the administration on their handling of the matter.

Greene told Bash the “most hurtful” thing Trump said to her “is he called me a traitor.”

“Which is absolutely untrue … and that is so extremely wrong. And those are the types of words used that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger,” Greene said.

“I stood with President Trump when virtually no one else did,” she added. “Campaigned all over the country. Spent millions of my own dollars helping him get elected.”

“I do support him and his administration, and I support them in delivering the campaign promises we made to the American people. His remarks, of course, have been hurtful,” Greene said. “However, I have something in my heart that I think is incredibly important for our country, and that is to end the toxic fighting in politics. And this has been going on for years, and it has divided our country, split up friends and families, neighbors, and it’s not solving our problems.”

When asked for the reason Trump turned on her, Greene replied, “Unfortunately, it has all come down to the Epstein files.”

“And that is shocking. I stand with these women, I stand with rape victims. I stand with children who are in terrible sex abuse situations, and I stand with survivors of trafficking and those that are trapped in sex trafficking,” she continued. “And I will not apologize for that. I believe the country deserves transparency in these files. And I don’t believe that that rich, powerful people should be protected if they have if they have done anything wrong.”

Greene also slammed Trump’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa — a former commander for the radical Islamic terror group al-Qaeda — which took place Nov. 10, the U.S. Marine Corps’s 250th anniversary.

“I very much am against that,” Greene said about the meeting during which, she claimed, Trump “honored” the Middle Eastern leader. “I think that was very hurtful to the great men and women who served over in the Middle East and were sent there and many of them that were killed and were injured and live with PTSD to this day for fighting al-Qaeda.”

Trump unveiled a new nickname for Greene in a Saturday post to Truth Social, calling her “Lightweight Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Brown.” The president justified the moniker noting that “Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!”

Greene “betrayed the entire Republican Party when she turned Left, performed poorly on the pathetic [The] View, and became the RINO [Republican in name only] that we all know she always was,” Trump wrote, referring to her Nov. 4 appearance on the ABC daytime talk show.

Greene claimed shortly thereafter on X she was “being contacted by private security firms with warnings” for her safety “as a hot bed of threats against me are being fueled and egged on by the most powerful man in the world.”

Should President Trump continue to support Marjorie Taylor Greene after her criticisms?

“Aggressive rhetoric attacking me has historically led to death threats and multiple convictions of men who were radicalized by the same type rhetoric being directed at me right now. This time by the President of the United States,” Green wrote in her post. “I now have a small understanding of the fear and pressure the women, who are victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his cabal, must feel. As a Republican, who overwhelmingly votes for President Trump’s bills and agenda, his aggression against me which also fuels the venomous nature of his radical internet trolls (many of whom are paid), this is completely shocking to everyone.”

Trump previously announced in a Friday Truth Social post he would be withdrawing his “support and Endorsement” of Greene, whom he called a “ranting Lunatic,” and signaled his openness to backing a primary challenger to the three-term congresswoman.

The president wrote that, despite his administration’s “record” policy achievements, “all I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!”

“She [Greene] has told many people that she is upset that I don’t return her phone calls anymore, but with 219 Congressmen/women, 53 U.S. Senators, 24 Cabinet Members, almost 200 Countries, and an otherwise normal life to lead, I can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day,” Trump continued. “I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support.”

Greene said later in her Sunday interview with Bash she had not called Trump, adding that “White House logs would prove that, his own cell phone records would prove it.”

“But I did post messages that I had sent to him and that was to, like, get involved, this is important,” she clarified. “The American people want the Epstein files released.”

“I’ve stood with the president. I have disagreed with him at times, Dana, and I‘m allowed to do that. I think that’s the most important thing we can do as Americans. And I’m urging my party. I’ve been putting massive pressure on my party and our speaker [Mike Johnson] to pass the agenda that the American people vote for. That’s the agenda that I fought for. Those are the campaign promises I made.”

Greene was notably voted out of the conservative House Freedom Caucus by her fellow members in 2023. She also made headlines over the past few years about her support for various conspiracy theories.

While first running for Congress in 2020, an interview resurfaced in which Greene appeared to question the reality of al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks, claiming there was no evidence that any “so-called plane crashed into the Pentagon.” She also reportedly expressed support for right-wing QAnon conspiracy theories prior to serving in the House.

Greene, also in 2020, came under fire for a tranche of Facebook videos in which she made remarks criticized as racist and antisemitic. She was also widely panned in 2021 for comparing COVID-era mandates to the Holocaust. The congresswoman later apologized for the remarks and told media outlets she privately visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
