A quiet afternoon in suburban Pennsylvania descended into chaos after a powerful explosion tore through a nursing home, trapping residents inside and forcing emergency crews into a frantic rescue effort.

According to the New York Post, the blast erupted around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol Township, roughly 30 minutes northeast of Philadelphia.

The explosion ignited a fast-moving fire that spread through the Bucks County facility, prompting authorities to declare a mass casualty incident, according to reports cited by WFMZ.

First responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene as thick, black smoke billowed from the building and flames consumed portions of the structure.

Video from local outlets showed firefighters battling the blaze from several angles while paramedics and police worked to secure the area.

Officials said multiple residents were trapped inside the nursing home as crews worked urgently to reach them. At least some of those residents were feared dead, though authorities have not yet confirmed fatalities or released details on the number of people injured.

Police have not disclosed what caused the explosion, and investigators have not said where within the facility the blast originated. The scope of the damage and the full impact on residents and staff remained unclear as the emergency response continued late into the afternoon.

Upper Masefield Township police confirmed that the situation was serious enough to warrant a mass casualty declaration, a designation typically used when the number of potential victims overwhelms available resources.

As the emergency unfolded, local, state, and federal officials said they were closely monitoring developments.

“My team and I are in direct communication with local officials and emergency responders, and we are closely monitoring development as authorities work to secure the scene and care for those affected,” U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick said in a statement posted on X.

“Please also join me in praying for the safety of the residents of the nursing home, the dedicated staff who care for them, and our brave first responders who rushed to the scene and ran toward danger without hesitation,” Fitzpatrick added.

Authorities urged residents to stay away from the area as emergency vehicles flooded nearby roads and crews continued working inside the damaged building. Officials said the scene remained active as firefighters searched for victims and ensured the fire was fully extinguished.

No timeline has been given for when officials expect to release further information, including possible casualties, injuries, or the cause of the explosion.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities said additional updates would be provided as soon as more details are confirmed.
