Former Republican Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich died Tuesday at 59 years old, according to a statement from his family provided to multiple outlets.

Brnovich served as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General, holding the position from 2015 till 2023 after first being elected in 2014. In a statement provided to ABC15, Brnovich’s family announced the death of the former prosecutor.

“It is with profound sorrow that the Brnovich family announces the passing of Mark Brnovich. Best known as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General, a state and federal prosecutor, and champion of justice, he will forever be remembered and cherished by us as a beloved father, husband, son, and brother. We are heartbroken with this loss and are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support from so many wonderful people across the state and country,” the statement reads.

“The family asks for privacy during this difficult time. Memorial service arrangements will be made public as they become available,” the statement added.

Early in his career from 1992 to 1998, Brnovich worked in the Gang/Repeat Offender Unit at the Maricopa County Attorney’s office, prosecuting many high profile cases, according to his bio in The Federalist Society. From 1998 to 2003, the former prosecutor worked as an Assistant Attorney General with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, developing a specialization in gambling law.

Additionally, Brnovich’s career included serving as Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, Judge Pro Tem of Maricopa County Superior Court, Command Staff Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army National Guard, Director for Constitutional Government at the Goldwater Institute and Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming.

In 2022, Brnovich ran for state senate, however, he lost in the primary to then-competitor Blake Masters.

Since the news of his passing, many, including Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes thanked Brnovich for his service and offered his family condolences.

“I am saddened to hear of the sudden passing of former Attorney General Mark Brnovich. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife Susan and their entire family at this difficult time. Mark dedicated many years to public service in Arizona, including his two terms as Attorney General,” Mayes wrote on X.

The cause of Brnovich’s death has not been confirmed.
