Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a warning Friday regarding Greenland — the territory’s future is in its own hands, not President Donald Trump’s.

“The future of Greenland is a decision for Greenland and for the Kingdom of Denmark,” Carney said at a press conference in Beijing following talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Politico reported.

Carney told NATO allies — including the U.S. — to “respect their commitments” as he reiterated Canada’s support for Danish sovereignty over the Greenland, which Trump has threatened to take over.

Should the U.S. respect Greenland's sovereignty as stated by Canada?

“We are NATO partners with Denmark, and so our full partnership stands,” Carney said. “Our obligations on Article 5, Article 2 of NATO stand, and we stand full-square behind those.”

Trump has upped his rhetoric that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security, IJR previously reported.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU has “doubled down on investments and supporting Greenland” and that the bloc would “continue our work on Arctic security with our allies, our partners, including the United States.”
