Donald Trump just took the Greenland saga to a whole new level — and this time, he’s bringing tariffs. In a fiery Truth Social post on Saturday, the former president announced sweeping 10% tariffs on eight European nations — Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland — all starting February 1. Why? Because Trump wants to buy Greenland, and Denmark still isn’t playing ball.
Trump isn’t mincing words. He’s framing the push as nothing less than a global security mission. “World Peace is at stake!” he declared, accusing Denmark and other European allies of freeloading off American goodwill for generations.
He says the U.S. has been “subsidizing” Europe by skipping tariffs — but those days are over unless Denmark sells.
And he’s not bluffing. Trump says the 10% tariff will balloon to 25% by June 1 if there’s no deal. He’s tying everything to Greenland — the massive, mineral-rich Arctic landmass that he claims is in danger of falling into the hands of America’s top rivals. “Russia or China will take Greenland,” he warned reporters last week, “and I am not going to let that happen.”

Trump mocked Denmark’s defense capabilities, claiming they have “two dogsleds as protection.” According to him, only the U.S. — under Trump — has the strength and foresight to secure Greenland for the West.
“Nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land,” he posted, emphasizing that America’s national security — and the world’s — hangs in the balance.
He also claimed the U.S. has been eyeing this purchase for 150 years and that “many Presidents have tried” and failed. But now, Trump says, the U.S. is “immediately open to negotiation” with Denmark and the targeted European nations — as long as they stop standing in the way of what he sees as a long-overdue deal.
In classic Trump fashion, this latest move combines high-stakes diplomacy, tough economic pressure, and unapologetic showmanship.
Whether it’s a negotiating tactic or a serious geopolitical power play, one thing’s for sure — Greenland’s not going to melt off the agenda anytime soon.
