Republican Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin criticized independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for not fixing healthcare during his decades in Congress during a Wednesday hearing.

Sanders served in the House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007 and has served in the Senate since, according to Ballotpedia. Mullin’s criticism came after he acknowledged he “ranted too long” during a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) hearing convened to consider the nomination of Dr. Casey Means for surgeon general. “Yes you did [rant too long],” Sanders said, prompting Mullin to snap.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t ask your opinion on that. And if I cared about your opinion, I would ask you. But I don’t care about your opinion. You’re part of the system,” Mullin said. “You’re part of the problem. You’ve been sitting here longer than I’ve even been alive. This is your problem. You should have fixed this a long time ago. You’ve been running on it so long, what have you been doing your whole life?”

Sanders noted that he did not choose to pursue becoming the surgeon general.

“That is definitely something we would never accept,” Mullin retorted.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. similarly rebuked Democratic Washington Sen. Patty Murray, accusing her of overseeing a significant decline in America’s health outcomes. during a May 20 Senate Appropriations Committee hearing.

“I want to point out something, senator. You presided here, I think, for 32 years. You presided over the destruction of the health of the American people,” Kennedy said. “Our people are now the sickest people in the world because you have not done your job. What have you done about it? What have you done about the epidemic of chronic disease? What have you done about the epidemic of chronic disease?”

President Donald Trump announced he was nominating Means in a May 7 Truth Social post.

“Casey has impeccable ‘MAHA’ [Make America Healthy Again] credentials, and will work closely with our wonderful Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to ensure a successful implementation of our Agenda to reverse the Chronic Disease Epidemic, and ensure Great Health, in the future, for ALL Americans,” the president wrote in his announcement.
