Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger went straight at President Donald Trump over affordability during her response to his 2026 State of the Union address. But critics were quick to point out a striking contrast: while blasting Trump’s tariffs as a financial burden on families, lawmakers in her own party have proposed roughly 50 new taxes and tax increases in Virginia in just the first weeks of the legislative session.

Spanberger used her nationally televised rebuttal to accuse Trump of driving up costs through trade policy.

“Is the president working to make life more affordable for you and your family?” she asked viewers.

She pointed to the administration’s tariffs, calling them “another massive tax hike on you and your family,” and claimed that American households have paid more than $1,700 each in added costs since Trump took office last year. She also argued that small businesses and farmers have been hurt, even though the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs just days ago.

“And even though the Supreme Court struck these tariffs down four days ago, the damage to us, the American people, has already been done,” Spanberger said.

She went further, accusing congressional Republicans of failing to check the president.

“They are making your life harder, they are making your life more expensive,” she said, adding that Americans are struggling with everyday costs, from housing to prescriptions.

But back in Richmond, Democrats have been advancing a sweeping slate of proposed revenue measures. According to WJLA, the taxes introduced in late January include levies on food delivery services, concerts, ride-sharing, fantasy sports, dog walking, dry cleaning, and even electric leaf blowers.

Should Virginia limit new tax proposals to enhance affordability for residents?

A memo circulated by the Advancing American Freedom Foundation estimated that just seven of those proposed Democratic tax bills, if enacted, would increase Virginians’ tax burden by $6.6 billion in the next fiscal year alone, according to The Center Square.

The political tension is hard to miss.

Spanberger flipped Virginia’s governorship from red to blue in November 2025, winning by 15 points after centering her campaign on affordability. Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson said at the time that if Democrats won the race, it would be because Spanberger tied economic frustrations directly to Trump’s policies.

Now, months into her tenure, the governor is positioning herself — and her party — as laser focused on lowering costs.

“Americans deserve to know that their leaders are focused on addressing the problems that keep them up at night,” Spanberger said in her rebuttal.

Yet the debate over what actually makes life more affordable is already playing out in Virginia’s legislature. As Trump prepares for a high-stakes midterm cycle and Democrats sharpen their economic attacks, voters are watching closely to see whether rhetoric on affordability aligns with policy on the ground.
