Hillary Clinton cut short an exchange with reporters Thursday after being pressed about why Ghislaine Maxwell attended her daughter Chelsea Clinton’s 2010 wedding.
The moment unfolded after the former secretary of state completed a closed-door House deposition connected to Jeffrey Epstein. As Clinton exited, a reporter raised a pointed question that immediately shifted the tone.
“Why was Ghislaine Maxwell invited to your daughter Chelsea Clinton’s wedding?” the reporter asked, noting that Maxwell had already been named in a civil lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre at the time and that Epstein had previously been convicted.
Clinton offered a short response.
“She came as the plus one, the guest of someone who was invited,” Clinton said. “Thank you all.”
She then ended the exchange without taking further questions.
Multiple media outlets have reported that Maxwell attended Chelsea Clinton’s July 31, 2010 wedding in Rhinebeck, New York. Photographs from the event show Maxwell among the guests. Maxwell later stated she attended the wedding with her then-boyfriend, technology executive Ted Waitt.
The timeline has drawn renewed scrutiny because Giuffre first filed civil claims against Epstein in 2009 under the pseudonym “Jane Doe 102,” alleging she had been trafficked as a minor and accusing Maxwell of recruiting and grooming her for Epstein. Epstein had already pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to charges related to soliciting prostitution from a minor.

Giuffre went on to sue Maxwell directly for defamation in 2015, arguing that Maxwell’s public denials of her accusations were false. That case was settled in 2017. Maxwell was later convicted in federal court in 2021 on sex trafficking-related charges and is currently serving a prison sentence.
Thursday’s exchange came amid renewed attention on high-profile figures connected to Epstein. The Clintons agreed to appear for questioning on Feb. 2 regarding their past interactions with him. Just one day before that appearance, the Department of Justice released another batch of records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation signed into law by President Donald Trump in November.
Among the documents was a reference to former President Bill Clinton, including an image depicting him in a hot tub with Epstein. Federal officials have been releasing materials in phases as required by the transparency measure.
While Clinton addressed the wedding question directly, her decision to end the press interaction quickly added to the intensity surrounding the issue. With additional records continuing to surface and political scrutiny intensifying, the Epstein case remains a flashpoint in Washington — and questions about past associations are far from fading away.
