Just over one in four Americans support the U.S.’ recent strikes against Iran, according to a newly released poll.

The U.S. and Israel both launched military strikes against the Islamic theocracy early Saturday morning, resulting in the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and roughly 40 Iranian officials. A Reuters/Ipsos survey released on Sunday found that about 27% of respondents expressed approval of the strikes, while 43% expressed disapproval and 29% were unsure.

The survey also shows that 56% of Americans think President Donald Trump is excessively willing to use military force in order to further the nation’s interests. The majority of Democrats, 87%, said the same, compared to 23% of Republicans and 60% of respondents who did not identify with either political party, according to the poll.

The poll also found that 55% of Republicans said they approved of the strikes against Iran while 13% disapproved. Among Republicans, 42% said they would be less inclined to back the Iran campaign if it results in “U.S. troops in the Middle East being killed or injured,” per the survey.

Additionally, Trump’s presidential approval rating among Americans inched down slightly to 39%, one percentage point below a separate Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Feb. 18-23, Reuters reported.

“A majority of Americans support President Trump’s decisive action against a terrorist regime that has killed and maimed thousands of Americans for nearly 50 years under the evil hand of the Ayatollah,” a source close to the White House told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement on Monday. “The President has always been clear that Iran, the world’s number one sponsor of terror, can never obtain a nuclear weapon, and his actions now will make America – and the world – a safer place.”

Trump told The New York Post on Monday that “I think that the polling is very good, but I don’t care about polling.”

“I have to do the right thing,” the president added. “I have to do the right thing. This should have been done a long time ago.”

On Monday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that the Trump administration is prepared to take any action it deems necessary and did not rule out deploying American ground forces in Iran. Hegseth added that “we fight to achieve the objectives the president of the United States has laid out.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) wrote Monday in an X post that “Iran continues to maliciously launch ballistic missiles, indiscriminately targeting military and civilian locations throughout the region.”

“U.S. forces remain on the hunt to eliminate this threat,” CENTCOM added in the social media post. “As the President has said, our resolve has never been stronger.”

Four U.S. service members died and at least five others were wounded during the start of combat operations against Iran, the Pentagon announced on Sunday.

“For years, Iran’s relentless nuclear ambitions, its expanded ballistic missile inventory, and its unwavering support for terror groups in the region have posed a clear and unacceptable threat to U.S. servicemembers, citizens in the region, and many of our allies,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune wrote in a statement posted to X on Saturday. “Despite the dogged efforts of the president and his administration, the Iranian regime has refused the diplomatic off-ramps that would peacefully resolve these national security concerns.”

“I commend President Trump for taking action to thwart these threats,” Thune continued.

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman said Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he believes Trump’s strikes against Iran were “entirely appropriate.”

The new Reuters/Ipsos survey gathered responses online from 1,282 U.S. adults nationwide. The poll’s margin of error was three percentage points.
