Former ESPN broadcaster Keith Olbermann is getting  some backlash after calling legendary college football coach Lou Holtz a “legendary scumbag” the day Holtz dies.

Olbermann disparaged Holtz on a post on X response to a clip of Holtz criticizing former President Joe Biden in 2020 for supporting abortion rights.

“Legendary scumbag, yes,” Olbermann wrote of Holtz, known for his time coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who died Wednesday at 89.

Olbermann has been receiving quite a lot of criticism in response to his post.

“You’re a scumbag that needs mental help,” one X user wrote to Olbermann.

Another wrote, “You’re the real scumbag here. Lou Holtz had more class, integrity, and genuine decency in his pinky finger than you’ll ever show in your lifetime.”

Another wrote, “You’re a grumpy, lonely, Godless man. All the things Lou Holtz was not.”

Here are a couple other responses:

I wonder what the world will say on the day you pass, Keith? I wonder what your legacy will be.

Good luck.

Is it appropriate for Olbermann to insult Holtz on the day he died?

You are the absolute opposite of Coach Lou Holtz. Your misery is pathetic and sad.

This is not the first time Olbermann has made a statement that was combative and ridiculed on social media.

After the U.S. men’s hockey team’s gold medal win, Olbermann criticized the team for accepting an invitation from President Donald Trump to the State of the Union address.

Olbermann wrote on X that any members of the men’s team who attended the event were “declaring their indelible stupidity and misogyny.” He praised the women’s team for declining the invitation.

In January, Olbermann went after former University of Kentucky women’s swimmer Kaitlynn Wheeler for celebrating a women’s rights rally outside the U.S. Supreme Court where’s oral arguments for two cases focused on the legality of biological male trans athletes in women’s sports.

“It’s still about you trying to find an excuse for a lifetime wasted trying to succeed in sports without talent,” Olbermann wrote in response to Wheeler’s post.

Holtz was an ardent supporter of Trump and said in February 2024 that Trump needed to “coach America back to greatness!”

Trump awarded Holtz with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States.
