The Atlantic contributing writer Jemele Hill claimed Americans living in the middle of the country who voted in favor of border security were motivated by racism during a Wednesday episode of “SPOLITICS Live.”

Former President Joe Biden reportedly presided over the highest level of net migration in American history, with President Donald Trump winning the 2024 election on a platform of mass deportations. Hill said on her show that Americans in states like Iowa and Nebraska did not have legitimate concerns about border security because of their location in the middle of the nation.

WATCH:

“A lot of y’all voted for what you voted for because of who they were keeping out the country. Some of y’all don’t want the country to look a certain way,” Hill said. “Some of y’all think this country is getting a little too brown, little too dark for your taste. And so you voted to deport and to terrorize certain members of the community because you don’t want the community of America to look a certain way. And just admit it!”

Do you believe concerns about border security from middle America are legitimate?

“You got people living in Iowa talking about border security. Nebraska, you live in Nebraska! What are you talking about!? Like what!? Worried about an invasion?” she continued. “Living in the middle part of the country where ain’t no border or nothing to any country. You ain’t even bordering Canada! Talking about ‘I’m worried about border security,’ living in Connecticut. What!? We see you!”

However, major immigration enforcement actions have occurred in the very states Hill mocked during her remarks.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyanese national employed as the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools on Sept. 26. He was living in the U.S. illegally and allegedly possessed a loaded handgun, a fixed-blade hunting knife and $3,000 in cash.

ICE also detained over 70 illegal immigrants working at Glenn Valley Foods on June 10 in Omaha, Nebraska, according to an agency press release. Some had active local warrants, previous DUI convictions and had previously been deported.
