A late-night senior prank ended in tragedy in north Georgia, but the wife of the high school teacher who died says she does not want the students involved to face criminal punishment.
According to Fox News, Laura Hughes is asking authorities to drop charges against the teenagers connected to the incident that led to the death of her husband, Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher at North Hall High School in Gainesville.
The incident happened Thursday night when a group of students went to Hughes’ home carrying toilet paper as part of a long-running prank tradition involving the teacher.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the students planned to cover the property before leaving in two vehicles once the prank was complete.
But events quickly took a tragic turn.
Investigators said Hughes was walking toward the street as the teens attempted to drive away. While moving toward the roadway, he slipped and fell on the pavement.
Moments later, he was struck by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace.
Laura Hughes told The New York Times that her husband had not been angry about the prank.
Rather, he was looking forward to catching the students in the act.
Instead of seeking punishment for those involved, she says her family wants to prevent another tragedy.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Hughes said. “This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”
Authorities said the students stopped their vehicles and tried to assist Hughes while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
Despite those efforts, the teacher later died from his injuries.
Wallace now faces felony charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Four other 18-year-old students — Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque and Ariana Cruz — were also arrested at the scene and charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass and littering.
Jail records show Wallace was taken into custody Saturday and given a total bond of $1,950. All five students have since been released on bond.
Jason Hughes had spent years working at North Hall High School, where he taught math and coached golf. The school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes also highlighted his involvement with students outside the classroom.
The school released a statement mourning the loss.
“Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father; a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues. He gave so much to so many in numerous ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family. We ask that the media and the public respect their privacy as they grieve.”
A GoFundMe created by a family friend is raising money to help support Hughes’ wife and the couple’s two young sons.
“Jason’s life was a blessing to so many, and his untimely passing will be indescribably difficult for his wife and two young boys for years to come,” the fundraiser states.
