Podcaster Joe Rogan is once again diving into the political crossfire, this time over the heated national debate surrounding voter ID laws. During a recent episode of his show, Rogan expressed disbelief that many Democrats continue to compare voter ID requirements to the discriminatory policies of the Jim Crow era.

Speaking with journalist Michael Shellenberger, Rogan questioned the logic behind claims that requiring identification at the ballot box creates unfair barriers to voting.

Shellenberger explained that many progressives frame the issue in historical terms, arguing that voter ID laws resemble the kinds of obstacles used in the Jim Crow South to suppress minority voters.

“When I talk to my progressive friends about it, you know, and family and friends, it’s very much like, ‘No, we can’t put barriers in the way of voting because that’s what they did during Jim Crow,’” Shellenberger said.

Rogan says it is ‘horses—‘ that progressives believe expecting voters to have ID is like Jim Crow

Rogan quickly pushed back on that comparison, arguing that verifying someone’s identity is simply a basic safeguard.

“ID is not a barrier,” Rogan responded. “It’s just an insurance that you’re a citizen while you’re voting.”

The conversation turned more heated when Shellenberger noted that many progressives also argue widespread voter fraud is extremely rare, suggesting that additional safeguards may not be necessary.

Rogan was openly skeptical.

“Do you believe that? That’s horse—,” Rogan said.

Shellenberger clarified that while he personally may not agree with that position, many progressives genuinely believe it.

“I think they believe it. I’ll put it that way,” he said.

But Rogan suggested something else may be going on: groupthink within political circles.

“Really? I think they just say it because that’s the thing that everybody says,” Rogan argued. “I think it’s a groupthink thing.”

Rogan also pointed to what he sees as a glaring contradiction exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. For years, Americans were often required to show proof of vaccination to access restaurants, workplaces, and events. Yet some of the same voices now argue that requiring identification to vote is unreasonable.

To Rogan, that contrast makes the argument against voter ID particularly difficult to understand.

“Most people in this country who are citizens have some form of ID or can get some form of ID,” he said.

He added that verifying identity when voting for the nation’s highest office should be viewed as a basic safeguard rather than a political flashpoint.

“And it’s entirely reasonable to ask people to prove that you are who you are if you’re voting for the president of the United States,” Rogan said. “That seems pretty reasonable.”
