Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett said Monday that a fugitive killed days earlier by Dallas SWAT officers after he pulled a gun on them was indeed a member of her security team — adding it was “alarming” he had made the cut.

The congresswoman posted a statement from her office on X saying she and her staff “waited for confirmation from local law enforcement” before breaking their silence about Diamon Robinson, publicly known by the alias Mike King, whom CBS News first reported Friday served as a key member of her security detail. Crockett’s team wrote in their statement that they were “saddened and shocked” by the news about Robinson, who was wanted for impersonating a police officer and was tracked by SWAT officers to a children’s hospital parking garage Wednesday, where the fatal standoff occurred.

“Our team followed all protocols outlined by the House to contract additional security. We were approved to use this vendor who also provided security services for additional entities in the local community and worked closely with law enforcement agencies including Capitol Police,” the statement read.

“The fact that an individual was able to somehow circumvent the vetting processes for something as sensitive as security for members of Congress highlights the loopholes and shortcomings in many of our systems. This is incredibly alarming, especially for those members who receive high volumes of credible and sophisticated death threat,” the statement from Crockett’s office continued.

As a former public defender, I’ve always believed people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. I believe in redemption. The man we knew showed up with respect, care, and commitment to protecting others.

“As a former public defender, I’ve always believed people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done,” Crockett wrote on X, accompanied by the statement from her team. “I believe in redemption. The man we knew showed up with respect, care, and commitment to protecting others.”

“We’re still learning the full story, but today we mourn a life lost. This is a tragic ending that we wish had been avoided for all, added the congresswoman, who on March 3 lost the Democratic primary for Texas Senate to Democratic Texas State Rep. James Talarico.

Also on Monday, Dallas Police released body-worn camera footage of the altercation in the Children’s Medical Center Dallas parking garage between Robinson and SWAT officers.

“He’s got that gun on him!” one officer could be heard saying in one bodycam video as sirens blared and a dog barked.

Another officer expressed that he wanted the arrest to be “peaceful,” adding, “We want you to do what I give you and you won’t get hurt. We don’t want anybody to get hurt. It ain’t worth it.”

“You exit the car,” the officer continued, as Robinson at the time had “barricaded” himself in his vehicle, CBS News first reported Wednesday. “Don’t reach for it. Don’t do anything, and nothing will happen. Keep your hands up.”

Later in the video, officers repeatedly called for Robinson to get out of his car, keep his hands up and not reach for his gun. The video then showed the fugitive point his gun at the officers, followed by a barrage of gunfire.

Robinson, who used other aliases besides Mike King, falsely convinced many people — including some in law enforcement — that he was a police officer and that his private security job placement company was legitimate, Dallas-based ABC affiliate WFAA reported, citing multiple anonymous sources. Besides Crockett, the imposter’s clients included banks and hotels, the outlet reported.

The statement from members of Crockett’s team also said Robinson, whom they repeatedly referred to by his alias “Mike,” had “been in and around” the team “for years.”

“There was never any reason to suspect that he wasn’t who he held himself out to be. He never endangered our team, worked diligently, coordinated with local law enforcement, and maintained positive relationships throughout the community. Mike always conducted himself respectfully and with care for those around him,” Crockett’s office wrote. “What we’re now learning about his past doesn’t fit the person we came to know as Mike King.”

“His death evokes a range of emotions. Our hearts grieve the loss of someone we knew and the lost good that could have come from his redemption,” the statement concluded, adding at the bottom, “There will be no additional statements.”
