With millions of visitors expected to flood the region this summer, Zohran Mamdani is sharply limiting activity in city parks.
According to the New York Post, the mayor signed an emergency order restricting new permits for events on parkland during the FIFA World Cup, a decision driven by concerns over strained police resources.
The rule, adopted by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation at the request of the New York City Police Department, will be in effect from June 11 through July 19.
During that time, new permits for “special events” in parks may be denied, especially for gatherings that were not held the previous year.
That could impact a wide range of activities, from concerts and food festivals to smaller gatherings requiring permits — even events with as few as 20 people.
City officials say the move is necessary as law enforcement prepares for overlapping large-scale events, including World Cup matches and celebrations tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“To more effectively deploy resources and control overtime costs, the NYPD has recommended that the department deny certain permit applications for new events between June 11, 2026 and July 19, 2026,” the parks agency said.
The rule also notes that policing demands tied to the tournament will “further divert resources from regular assignments and from crime-fighting, public safety, and counter-terrorism duties.”
Despite the restrictions, demonstrations will not be affected and remain exempt from the policy.
Before approving any special permits, NYC Parks will consult with the NYPD to determine whether officers are available to monitor events.
The expected influx of visitors is substantial. About 1.2 million people are projected to travel to the region for eight World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with many staying in New York City.
An additional 6 million visitors are anticipated for festivities surrounding the country’s 250th anniversary, which will coincide with Fleet Week.
Major fan events are already planned. The NYNJ World Cup 26 Fan Zone Queens will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, featuring match broadcasts, entertainment, and food vendors.
Meanwhile, the FIFA Fan Festival NYNJ is set for Liberty State Park, offering live screenings, music, and family-friendly programming throughout the tournament.
City leaders say the temporary restrictions are a trade-off to ensure safety and manage the unprecedented demand on public resources during a historic summer.
