Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is giving President Donald Trump some steely eyes over his new White House ballroom.
The Democratic governor has taken umbridge with use of foreign steel in the project.
“I think it’s a slap in the face to American steelworkers that the President of the United States would knock down the East Wing and rebuild it with foreign steel,” Shapiro said during a press conference in Hershey.
According to the New York Times, European steel maker ArcelorMittal “is donating 10s of millions of dollars of foreign steel for President Trump’s new ballroom.”
“He should be relying on U.S. steelworkers; he should be relying on U.S. steel,” Shapiro added. “We have made significant investments and worked hard to earn billions of dollars in investments to bolster our steel industry here in Pennsylvania. He should be relying on American-made steel.
“I mean, for a guy who talks a good game about American steel, he should put American steelworkers first, and I think it’s a slap in the face to American steelworkers, and a slap in the face to Pennsylvania.”
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said, “I have tons of American steel in my home. I’d love to see American steel at the White House too.”
The White House responded, saying, “Due to the top secret and sensitive nature of various elements of the East Wing Modernization and Ballroom project, we do not discuss specific materials and where or how they are applied.”
