A dramatic early morning crash in Tulsa left a vehicle overturned on a busy interstate and a young child hospitalized after the car plunged from an overpass.
According to Fox News, police say the incident unfolded just after 5 a.m. Saturday, near Southwest Boulevard, a car carrying three people went off course and ultimately fell onto Interstate 244 below.
When officers with the Tulsa Police Department arrived, they found the vehicle upside down in the eastbound lanes.
Dispatchers had already relayed a troubling detail from the scene.
They reported hearing a child crying.
Authorities said a 17-year-old driver, an 18-year-old passenger, and a 1-year-old child were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe the sequence of events began when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign.
Police said the vehicle then entered a slight curve in the road but did not complete the turn, instead striking a curb.
That impact launched the car into the air.
From there, the vehicle traveled over a drainage ditch before crashing through a barrier along the overpass.
It then plunged onto the interstate below, where it landed upside down.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as authorities shut down portions of the highway to allow firefighters and EMS personnel to respond safely.
The 1-year-old child was injured in the crash and transported to a hospital.
Officials said the child is expected to recover.
However, authorities noted the child was not secured in a car seat at the time of the incident.
The conditions of the two older occupants were not detailed, but police confirmed that all three individuals were involved in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police said charges against the teenage driver are possible.
