A routine ride home turned into a race against disaster when a group of Mississippi middle schoolers found themselves in control of a moving bus after their driver suddenly became unresponsive.
According to the New York Post, the tense moment unfolded on April 22 along a four-lane highway in Kiln, where students from Hancock Middle School were traveling when their driver, Leah Taylor, suffered a medical emergency.
Security footage later showed Taylor slumped over at the wheel as the bus continued down the road, prompting several students to act without hesitation.
“She kind of fell over, like flopped over, and everyone started standing up,” student McKenzy Finch told WLOX.
What followed was a coordinated effort by five students who quickly stepped into different roles to regain control of the vehicle.
Sixth-grader Jackson Casnave said he moved toward the front and grabbed the steering wheel after noticing the danger.
“I saw the bus was veering off to the side,” he said.
At the same time, another sixth-grader, Darrius Clark, took action to slow the bus down by hitting the brakes.
“The bus started rolling forward. It started like, gaining speed, so when I clicked the brakes, it about threw me out the windshield,” Darrius said.
While some students focused on controlling the vehicle, others turned their attention to helping the driver.
Eighth-grader Destiny Cornelius said she noticed Taylor trying to reach for medication and stepped in to assist.
“I saw her reaching for it. I knew that’s what she needed,” Destiny said.
Another student also spotted the bottle in Taylor’s hand, helping guide the effort to get her the help she needed.
The quick thinking by the group ultimately brought the bus to a safe stop, preventing what could have been a serious crash and ensuring the safety of everyone on board.
In the days that followed, the students were recognized for their actions during a school pep rally and were promised a special lunch outing as a reward.
Taylor, 46, later expressed her gratitude to the students who stepped in during the emergency.
“I’m grateful for my students,” she said. “They’re the ones that saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus.”
The dramatic incident highlighted not only the dangers of the situation but also the composure and teamwork displayed by the young students when it mattered most.
