A sudden burst of law enforcement activity near the nation’s capital triggered a security lockdown at the White House on Monday after an officer-involved shooting unfolded just blocks away.

According to the New York Post, the United States Secret Service confirmed its personnel responded to the incident, which took place along the National Mall near the Washington Monument, a short distance south of the White House complex.

“One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown,” the agency said in a statement.

Officials indicated the shooting stemmed from a confrontation involving an armed person.

A spokesperson said it appeared the situation escalated after “a confrontation with an armed individual,” though further details were not immediately released. Authorities said a formal briefing on the incident would be held later in the day.

Inside the White House, journalists were quickly moved into the briefing room as part of a safety lockdown while officers secured the surrounding area.

Video circulating on social media showed reporters rushing off the North Lawn and heading indoors as the situation unfolded.

At the scene, a heavy law enforcement presence quickly formed. Footage showed dozens of Secret Service agents and National Guard members deployed, with sections of nearby sidewalks cordoned off by yellow police tape.

Despite the disruption, a previously scheduled event featuring President Donald Trump and small business owners continued as planned. The president did not publicly address the shooting.

The incident comes just over a week after a separate security scare involving Cole Allen, who authorities say attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner while armed.

According to officials, Allen allegedly fired a weapon during that encounter and is now facing multiple federal charges, including attempting to assassinate the president.

Monday’s shooting adds to heightened security concerns in the area, as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the confrontation and use of force near one of the most heavily guarded locations in the country.
