Fans of Bonnie Tyler were met with sudden concern this week after news broke that the legendary performer had been hospitalized for emergency surgery.
According to Page Six, the 74-year-old singer was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she owns a home, after requiring urgent intestinal surgery.
A statement posted to her official website confirmed the situation and offered reassurance about her condition.
“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to the hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement read.
Despite the alarming development, there was encouraging news.
“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” the statement continued. “We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”
Tyler, whose powerhouse vocals made her one of the most recognizable voices in pop-rock, rose to prominence in the late 1970s.
Early hits like “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache” helped establish her career, but it was the 1983 smash “Total Eclipse of the Heart” that cemented her global fame.
She later followed that success with “Holding Out for a Hero,” which became another defining anthem of the era.
Even decades later, Tyler has spoken about the lasting impact of her music.
“I still get excited when I hear the song on the radio,” she said during a 2024 interview, referring to “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
“Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world plays ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ and I never get tired of singing it,” she added.
Her sudden hospitalization comes just days before she was scheduled to launch a European tour, with the first show set for May 22 in Malta. It remains unclear whether the surgery will affect those plans.
Earlier this year, Tyler spoke candidly about her health and ability to continue performing.
“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” she said in March. “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything.”
She also acknowledged some physical challenges, noting past knee issues that required medical procedures.
“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts, which turned out to be very successful. So, hopefully that will last for a long time,” she said.
Although she admitted she has “slowed down” over the years, Tyler has made it clear she has no plans to step away from music.
“I started singing when I was 17, and I never thought I’d still be doing it at this age,” she said in a previous interview. “I’ve slowed down a little bit, but I know now that I will never retire.”
For now, fans are focused on her recovery, hoping the iconic singer will soon return to the stage.
